The dictionary meaning of the word “damp” can be a little misleading given the damages it can cause to your building. For instance, according to the English dictionary a damp means slightly wet. On the flip side, a damp can potentially take away the longevity of your building over a period. Damp proofing treatments are, therefore, the need of the hour for your building against the possible disasters.

Based on the nature of the damp, we, however, find two types of damp such as the following.

1)      Penetrating damp: It can be described as the damp that goes deep inside into the walls or ceilings of your building. You will be pleasantly surprised to know that it is very common in the UK or in any part of the world that is usually caused by the water leakage. The root cause of the penetrating damp can, therefore, be the porous bricks and stones, the weak joints between the bricks and stones, cracked roof etc. to name a few. You get to see the patches of damp on walls, ceiling etc.

Damp proofing treatments for the penetrating damp:

DIY: DIY stands for Do It Yourself. You can initiate damp proofing treatments on your own only when the damp has just started or the spread is very much limited. But, before you get on the task of damp proofing, educate yourself on the subject from your architect friends or the person having the expertise and experience on the damp proofing. This will work as a stitch in time that will save nine for you. Because, you will then commit no mistake thereby the waste on your endeavours can be averted.

Call the expert: To our understanding, it is the safest way of carrying out the damp proofing treatments for your building. Because, they have the right knowledge and acumen for the penetrating damp proofing on your building. This in turn will safeguard you from the problem for many years to come. Nothing, however, can be said with surety here since the vagaries of nature can never be predicted while wear and tear of your building with ageing is also natural.

2)  Rising damp: Rising damp is the one that slowly spreads upwards thereby leaves patches of damp on the wall. Interestingly, the patch of the damp can go as high as 6 metres from the ground level. As such, damp proofing treatments must be adopted on the very first sight of it. The reasons for such a damp can be manifold such as the external salt formation on the wall (usually found in the areas where the presence of salt in the soil is high), damaged floorboards, and the damaged wall plaster.

For the damp proofing treatments, you should call the expert here or can take the DIY route based on your understanding of the situation.

The damp proofing treatments for your building can distinctly be segmented into steps like detection, repair, drying up, and then corrective treatment. Follow the steps for better results here.
